GASP XXXV: Characteristics of the Diffuse Ionised Gas in Gas-stripped Galaxies

چکیده
The diffuse ionized gas (DIG) is an important component of the interstellar medium that can provide insights into different physical processes affecting in galaxies. We utilise optical IFU observations 71 gas-stripped and control galaxies from Gas Stripping Phenomena (GASP) survey, to analyze properties dense DIG, such as metallicity, ionization parameter log(q), difference between measured $\log[OI]/H\alpha$ value predicted by star-forming models, given log[OIII]/H$\beta$ ($\Delta log[OI]/H\alpha$). compare these at spatial scales, among gas-stripping stages, disks tails stripped metallicity similar DIG a galactocentric radius. log(q) lower for compared gas. median values correlate best with stellar mass, most massive show increase toward their galactic centers. clearly shows higher $\Delta log[OI]/H\alpha$ gas, much spaxels having LIER/LINER like emission. regions highly highest log[OI]/H\alpha$, exhibit high extend large projected distances areas (up 10 kpc). conclude least partly process other than star-formation, probably mixing, shocks accretion inter-cluster

Localized magnetic reconnection as a cause of extraplanar diffuse ionised gas in the galactic halo
Many observations indicate the occurrence of ionised gas in the distant halos of galaxies (including our own). Since photoionisation by stars (mainly O stars, young or evolved low-mass stars depending on the kind of galaxy) does not seem to be exclusively responsible for the ionisation of the hydrogen filaments that should otherwise cool fast and recombine quickly, the question arises which ext...
متن کاملGas cooling within the diffuse ISM of late–type galaxies
We combine observations of spiral galaxies in the [CII] line at 158 μm, made with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer aboard ISO, with previous data from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory to study the origin of this line, which is the main coolant of the interstellar medium at relatively low temperatures. We also use HI and CO(10) observations of these galaxies and estimate the respective line fluxe...
متن کاملDiffuse Thermal Emission from Very Hot Gas in Starburst Galaxies
BeppoSAX observations of the nearby archetypical starburst galaxies NGC253 and M82 are presented. Spectral analysis shows that the 2–10 keV spectra of both galaxies, extracted from the central 4 regions, are best fitted by a thermal emission model with kT ∼ 6–9 keV and metal abundances ∼ 0.1–0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emission is extended in NGC 253, and pos...
متن کامل3D Studies of Neutral and Ionised Gas and Stars in Seyfert and Inactive Galaxies
We are conducting the first systematic 3D spectroscopic imaging survey to quantify the properties of the atomic gas (Hi) in a distance-limited sample of 28 Seyfert galaxies and a sample of 28 inactive control galaxies with well-matched optical properties (the VHIKINGS survey). This study aims to address the role of the host galaxy in nuclear activity and confront outstanding controversies in op...
